Why Is It So Hard to Find a PMHNP Preceptor?
Finding a PMHNP preceptor is one of the hardest challenges in any nurse practitioner program, and it's not because you're not trying hard enough. NP education depends on clinicians volunteering to train the next generation, while giving them almost no time, compensation, or institutional support to do it.
Most PMHNP preceptors receive little or no pay for the hours they spend onboarding, supervising, and reviewing documentation. Without incentives, many simply opt out.
Online NP programs recruit nationally, flooding the same cities with thousands of students. Local clinicians receive dozens of requests every week. The preceptor pool hasn't kept up.
